Church Scattered: How Christians At Work Become Corporate Shepherds

When you read Church Scattered you will find several significant reasons why Christians should merge work and faith.   We started with the changing of leadership best practice to prioritizing people over process and eventually moved to the biblical calling to be the daily fragrance of His grace.

The best way for me to express the role of every Christian at work is to see themselves as a Corporate Shepherd.  This has absolutely nothing to do with positional authority but everything to do with your calling to care for all the people in your relational network at work.

In the Church Scattered strategy, corporate shepherds at every level see themselves as Christian leaders who are committed to making a profit so they can then make a difference.  They all have a passion for excellence because they know they are representing the character values of Christianity to a lost world that is probably never going to church on Sunday.

People are watching you everyday and when you bear the fruit of the spirit in the midst of a stressful workplace culture, it makes an incredible impression.  When you appropriately ask people how you can pray for them and then stay connected through their pain, they will be moved closer to Christ.

I mentioned in the book, that in 2018 I worked for a couple of years for a Fortune 100 company as a consultant.  My responsibilities connected me with the top executives of the company and some were Christians.  Some were more open about their faith than others.

However, the best example of being a corporate shepherd was the lady who did all the housekeeping for the building.  Her passion for excellence could be seen in the fact that you could literally eat lunch sitting on the bathroom floors.

Her heart for ministering to the people in her network could be seen and heard by all of the people who would gather around her cleaning cart and be encouraged by her positive and gracious words.  She knew all of them by name and had invested enough time to know all their stories.

She never compromised her daily responsibilities for doing great work but she also never forgot why she was really there.  Corporate shepherds believe that being a fully devoted follower of Christ makes them a better employee.  They also believe that where the people in their network spend eternity is the ultimate bottom line.
